In the dark of the Red Kingdom, white foam rolled across sudden breakers, came up over wet sand and licked Bran’s toes. Faint fluttering moved the hair at his brow, a wind that grew gradually stronger, and he became aware that it was too purposeful, not a random breeze but something more directed… Something familiar… Ffion.
Scowling, he turned his face up into the gusts.
“The wind doesn’t hide you, Ffion. Go back to Macsen.”
She came out of the wind, a bolt of silk uncurling, and hovered beside him less than solid, more than mist.
“I did not come from the king, Shining Prince. He has more cares than you or I tonight. Did you forget? It is Samhain. No… I followed you of my own will, and found it easy. A path of ash marks a line across half the kingdom now.”
He fixed Ffion with a glare that he knew would show sadness, the swelling pain within him.
“Sorry. But I didn’t want to be followed.”
“The trail says otherwise—so does everything about you but words. What troubles?”
‘What troubles?’
His voice was heavy with sarcasm. Ffion came closer, touched his temple with a fingertip. The contact tingled on his skin, the touch of melting snow that left no dampness.
“Poor prince. What happened to you? All those years away, did they break you? We are not like mortals, we sidhe. Magic we are, and the nature of things… But you are at war with your nature. Poor prince, what happened?”
“Milesians happened to me. Cáelbad mac Briuin and his daughter happened to me! They took everything from me, and now I don’t know who I am, and I don’t know what love is, and I’m bound by an oath I don’t even remember!”
Panting, trembling, haunted, pained more at this revelation than anything else that had come before, Bran pushed himself to his feet and turned to face her.
“Can you tell me, Ffion? The oath that binds me? Macsen won’t—he told me… He told me he wouldn’t tell me until I remembered on my own. Second thing he told me, and I didn’t listen—I never listen!”
But she was shaking her head, shaking her head and backing away from him and from the rising glow that ringed him in glorious aura.
“If the Red King won’t tell you…”
“Don’t say it, Ffion.”
The light blazed higher, and she put her hands out before her and retreated farther in open fear.
“I cannot! Shining Prince you may be, but he is my king! My king. I cannot!”
Fire crawled across the sand, birthed golden glass. Bran’s voice leaped out of him in a roar he barely recognized as his own, demanding, no longer a question, blazing not in anger but agony.
“You have to tell me! I have to know!”
“Yes. Yes, I can see that.”
Hopeful, for a moment Bran allowed Winter to beat back the heat, but the answer he wanted was not to be.
“But you must ask the Red King.”
The words lingered even as Ffion fled, vanished into wind and the burning air.
